Although obscure Lucca’s origins are undoubtedly extremely antique and date to pre-Roman times.
Remains of the first ring of walls built in a quadrilateral bear witness to the town's Roman origins. The town is surrounded by a splendid ring of walls fortified with ramparts that you can walk along or ride along by bike (bicycles can be hired locally).
Don’t miss the Amphitheatre, Palazzo Guinigi and Villa Guinici (home of the National Museum), the Palazzo del Podestà, the Duomo di San Martino and the Palazzo della Signoria.
Lucca is only a few kilometres from the sea.
Lucca is famous for its “zuppa di farro”, a soup made using a cereal similar to spelt grown in the Garfagnana area.
