This page contains the answers to the questions most frequently put to us by our guests about the farm, the surrounding area and Tuscany in general with the aim of resolving any doubts you might have.
How do you get to Montaione?
The nearest airports are in Florence (Amerigo Vespucci) and Pisa (Galileo Galilei).
We recommend you hire a car to reach the La Casaccia farm and for visits to the many small towns in Tuscany that cannot be reached by public transport. You can get here by train if you prefer; the nearest railway station is at Castelfiorentino. From Castelfiorentino you’ll need to take a bus or taxi to reach Montaione although these services may not necessarily be available if you arrive at night.
We normally organise a pick-up service (no extra fee) for guests coming by train to Castelfiorentino.
Do you need to have a car?
We recommend coming by car or hiring a car because it makes it easier to get around and see more of what the Tuscan countryside and villages have to offer during a short stay.
However you can stay at the La Casaccia farm even if you do not have transport because the village of Montaione is only a kilometre away from the farm and can be easily reached on foot.
Is it possible to hire a car?
Yes, in Certaldo with possibilityt of delivery and withdrawal to the Casaccia, with a small supplement.
Is it possible to hire a motorbike?
Yes, but the closest motorbike hire facilities are in San Gimignano.
Is it possible to hire bicycles?
Yes, you need to book them the day before; the cost is 10 euros per day (includes insurance and delivery to the farm).
Is it possible to hire a quad bike?
Yes, you can hire quads or book guided quad tours in the Tuscan hills (half or entire day).
How far is the La Casaccia farm from Montaione?
La Casaccia is about one kilometre away from Montaione.
Can we reach Montaione on foot?
Sure. It's a kilometre by foot along a quiet country road.
How far is Montaione from Tuscany’s great art centres?
Montaione is around 47 km from Florence, around 50 km from Pisa and Siena and around 60 km from Lucca.
Can these cities be reached by public transport?
You can go to Florence, Pisa and Siena by train from the Castelfiorentino station. To reach Lucca you need to change at Florence.
Florence can also be reached by bus from the centre of Montaione (you are advised to check the timetable first because there are only a few buses a day).
What services does Montaione offer?
The main services are available all year round: banks, post-office, doctor, dentist, vet, restaurants, bars, shops, small supermarkets, groceries, shops selling typical local products, bookshop, Internet point.
What is the closing time of the shops in Montaione?
The shops are open until 19.30 – 20.00.
Are the local shops open on Sundays?
Yes, from April to October, some of the local shops are also open on Sundays.
Are there restaurants in the vicinity?
Yes, there is a restaurant/pizzeria about 600 metres from the farm where you can eat an evening meal or buy pizzas to take away and eat in the comfort of your apartment.
Are there typical Tuscan restaurants in the vicinity?
Yes, there are 4 typical Tuscan restaurants and pizzerias in the centre of Montaione; there are 12 restaurants in the area where you can enjoy a wide range of typical Tuscan dishes.
Is there a rosticceria in Montaione where you can buy ready cooked food?
Yes, there is an excellent rosticceria offering delicious food that you can buy and take away to enjoy in your apartment.
Until what time can you eat in the restaurants?
You can eat until around 22.00 in the restaurants, or until 23.00 – 24.00 in the pizzerias depending on the season.
Is there a pharmacy in Montaione?
Yes, in the centre of the village, in Via Roma 46.
Is there a medical service?
Yes, there are doctors, a paediatrician, a dentist, and a Guardia Medica (first-aid station) in Villa Serena in Via da Filicaja (Tel. 0571 6991).
How far away is the nearest hospital?
The nearest hospital with an casualty department is at Castelfiorentino (about 8 km away).
Is there an Internet Point at Montaione?
Yes, the Internet point is in the local library in Via Marconi (Tel. 0571 6992529).
Are there banks in Montaione?
Yes, there are 3 banks in Montaione with cash machines open around the clock.
Is there a post office in Montaione?
Yes, the post office is in Piazza Cavour.
Where is the local Tourist Information Office?
In the centre of Montaione, in Via Cresci 15 (Tel. 0571 699255). The opening times vary according to the season.
Is there a car mechanic in Montaione?
Yes, there is a garage just around the corner from La Casaccia.
Is there an electrical repair shop for cars in Montaione?
Yes, there is an electrical repair shop just around the corner from the farm.
Is there a panel beater in Montaione?
Yes, there is a body shop near to La Casaccia.
Can I take riding lessons locally?
Yes, there is a riding school at about a kilometre from La Casaccia.
Can I go horse trekking?
Yes, the local school organises trekking sessions lasting a few hours, half a day or even all day.
The Equitania horse-riding club organises night-time trekking by full moon.
Are there tennis facilities locally?
Yes, there is an indoor tennis court in Montaione.
Are there football facilities locally?
Yes, there is a football field at Montaione.
Are there golf facilities in the area?
There is an 18-hole course at Castel Falfi (about 8 km away).
Can I go on a guided tours?
Yes, guided tours are organised (all day with guide and lunch included).
Is it possible to have a cook at home?
Yes, but you need to book in advance.
Is there a spa locally?
Yes, in Gambassi Terme (about 8 km away) there is a spa centre called You can choose between medical treatments (hydrotherapy and inhalation therapy) or from a wide range of beauty treatments.
Are festivals, fairs or local produce/crafts markets held in Montaione?
Yes, in the summer fairs and markets selling local produce and crafts are held in the old quarter. On the last Sunday of October a Truffle and Crafts Fair (Mostra Mercato del Tartufo e dei Prodotti Tipici) is held in Montaione.
Can I use the washing machine?
Yes, there is a washing machine in the bathroom next to the swimming pool (you’ll need to bring your own washing powder).
Is toilet paper supplied?
All bathrooms are supplied with toilet paper but you’ll need to buy more if it runs out.
Is it possible to have linen changed during the week?
Yes, for a small fee.
Can I send or receive faxes?
Yes, there is a fax machine in the reception area.
Can I pay by credit card?
Yes, we accept Visa – Mastercard – Maestro.
Can I taste wines and typical local products?
Yes, we have Chianti wine and excellent olive oil produced locally.
If I want to play ping-pong do I have to bring my own racquets?
No, we place racquets at the disposal of our guests.
