Pisa is a city of Etruscan origins which became a powerful maritime republic in the Middle Ages; it also produced some of the world's leading artists and has a tradition of learning that continues today in its role as one of the leading centres of many branches of scientific research. Situated on the banks of the River Arno and boasting a wealth of monuments, palaces and churches, Pisa is still surrounded by its ancient town walls and original gates. Sites that must not be missed are the Piazza dei Miracoli, the Duomo, the Baptistery, and the world’s most famous Leaning Tower. Pisa is only a few minute’s drive from the sea; to the south you’ll find Marina di Pisa, Tirrenia and Livorno, to the north are Viareggio and the coast of Versilia going up to Massa-Carrara. We recommend eating seafood specialities accompanied by a superb white wine from the Val di Fievole. |
