Florence is famous all over the world for its old town rich in art, churches, palaces, monuments and museums. Piazzale Michelangelo, widely considered to be one of Italy’s most splendid sights, allows tourists to admire the city’s main monuments. On the hillside below nestles the Franciscan church of San Salvatore al Monte and just around the corner you’ll find the church of San Miniato, an outstanding example of Florentine Romanesque architecture.

In Fiesole, the ancient Etruscan town 6 km from the centre of Florence, you can admire the Etruscan walls, the Temple, the Roman Theatre, the Roman Baths, the Cemetery overlooked by the picturesque monastery of San Francesco. Right of Fiesole is the hill of Settignano.

As you approach Galluzzo south of Florence, perched high above you is the Carthusian monastery of La Certosa (founded 1310-65) with its picturesque cells.

There are many restaurants where you can taste the typical dishes of the Tuscan cuisine like the famous Bistecca alla Fiorentina (T-bone steak), Ribollita (a tasty cabbage soup), La pappa con il pomodoro (tomato soup), and choice of bruschettas with olive oil made in the Tuscan hills and wash down your meal with a superb Chianti Classico.
